OK, hopefully the LJ tech brain-trust can help me out here. I’m hoping I’m overlooking something simple/stupid.
The problem:
I can only connect with one PC at a time to the internet thru my 4 port router and new cable modem.
Equipment:
- Comcast high-speed cable modem with phone capabilities.
- Basic Linksys 4 port (non-wireless) router
- Two identical PCs running Vista
Details:
Just got my new Comcast cable modem installed (it’s the one with the built in phone too). Hooked directly to PC, works fine.
Added my old 4-port Linksys router. Needed to power cycle all the pieces to get it to work (turn off PC, turn off router, power cycle modem, turn on router, turn on PC).
Went to plug in wife’s PC, did not want to connect.
Shut off my PC, rebooted her’s, still no luck.
Kept mine shut off, power cycled the system (turn off wife PC, turn off router, power cycle modem, turn on router, turn on wife PC), it connected!
Turned on my PC, no connection, wife’s still working.
Turned off wife’s PC, rebooted mine, no luck.
Did the full “trio power cycle” on my PC and it works.
Wife’s PC on boot up will no longer work.
See the pattern?
I’ve tried leaving the modem on and power cycling the router and PC, still no luck. The modem needs to reset in order for the new IP connection to work.
I looks like I need to power cycle/reset everything to get the IP connection to refresh and connect. But then it won’t let me connect more than one PC at a time. Both PC’s can connect, but not at the same time. The PC’s were also just part of another router setup that is no longer in use. I don’t know if that would have anything to do with it, but the more info the better.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for all your help.
